20 Year Journey – Ronnie’s Homeschool Life

I’ve never even considered homeschool, until I was 4 months pregnant with my first child. God placed this calling so heavily upon my heart that by the time my son was born, I knew there was no way I could send him to an institutionalized school –  Not because I thought my child was better than others, but because I was commissioned by God – I had a purpose.

At the time, my church had a christian school, so I relied upon the advice and techniques of our christian school principal, who was sooo wonderfully helpful and patient with me. When my son started Pre-K, my daughter was born, and a couple of years after that, we moved to another state.

I didn’t have the support system I was used to having, so I had to find my own way with curriculum, teaching techniques, and many other things.  Back then, homeschool wasn’t as popular as it is now.  At  that time, there was only Abeka, Bob Jones, Alpha Omega, and a couple of others. Most educational curriculum companies were not willing to sell to homeschool families, and I was forced to pick apart Christian school curriculum manuals and tailor concepts to the needs of my children.  Then, overnight,  homeschool just blew up and now there is sooo much out there,  that it can leave a parent’s head spinning in confusion, from the choices!

Life has been incredibly interesting for my family… We have traveled with my husband on countless  business trips all over the U.S.A. (doing school in Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Arizona, etc…), we have taken missionary journeys to parts of Mexico, Dominican Republic, Haiti, etc., we entered into contests -and won, and done many other crazy and interesting things – and we are still living to tell about it!!

At present, my son, a homeschool graduate,  was accepted (with full scholarship and honors) into the university of his choice. He is now 22 years old and owns his own business.  My daughter, who graduated from Homeschool last May, is an aspiring teacher. She has spent this year volunteering  in our church’s Christian School as a 3rd grade teacher, and plans to go to college in the fall.

God has been soooo good to us! And hopefully my life’s experiences can be of some help to you! Hang in there, homeschool parent! The best is yet to come!
